Author In The House Welcomes Ana Hart!

Today we welcome fellow author Ana Hart to Author In The House.  Ana's taking over today with a serious post on a subject which ties into her new release, Reborn.

It's an important message and it sounds like an amazing read!  Without further ado, here's Ana....

The Inner Battle: Fighting Against Addiction by Ana Hart

Thanks so much Lee Ann for having me on your blog today! Since you've been posting about the subject of war recently in honor of your latest release, In the Shadow of War (congratulations, by the way!), I decided to do a post about war, as well. But a different kind of war – the inner kind.

Addiction, to any substance, isn't a humorous topic (which means I'm putting on my serious hat today!), but it's something many people face on an everyday basis. I have an addictive personality and because of that, I've always tried to be super careful. I've never done any sort of drug. I've never smoked tobacco. I only drink when I'm around my friends and only then in moderation. Alcoholism runs in my family (along with a slew of other unpleasant things), so I've always been incredibly wary about my alcohol consumption.

Thankfully, I've managed to keep away from all the seriously bad stuff and to this day, the only thing I'm really addicted to is caffeine (and maybe chocolate. Dark chocolate). By all definitions, caffeine is technically a drug, but it could always be worse, right? That's what I always tell myself.

My recent release, Reborn, the first book in my One Powerful Addiction series, deals with the subject of addiction, though I've tried my best to spin it in a humorous light. That's how I deal with all the unpleasant things in life – humor. I laugh when I'd rather cry and it gets me through to yet another day. Reborn is also unique in that it's a romance told explicitly in the first-person from the hero's point-of-view (save for the half-page third-person prologue). True, the addiction the main character, Daniel Webb, faces on a daily basis is one none of us will probably ever face as he's addicted to a supernatural power that he's been cursed with, but the heart of the matter remains the same. Addiction is a serious thing, and as the series progresses, Daniel will have to decide which means more to him: His life (which is spiraling quickly out of control) or this supernatural energy he's decided he can't live without.

Blurb for Reborn:

Daniel Webb is your fairly average twenty-something year-old living in the bustling city of Stone Hills, Arkansas. High school graduate, College dropout, and currently an employee of a local coffee shop, where he spends the majority of his nights hovering over a hot grill. You know, a totally glamorous lifestyle...

Oh, yeah, and Sarelia, an elder spirit of the Lower World, gifted him with powers beyond his wildest imaginings only a few months ago. Some people would have been grateful. Others would have simply been in denial.

All Daniel feels is resentment.

Because honestly, Daniel's life is kinda sucking at the moment. His girlfriend Malorie dumped him. He's crashing on his brother, Mark's couch (who's being a bit of a dick about the whole thing), and his best friend, James Harin, won't stop smothering him with pity.

But when Daniel bumps into the sexy Alyssa Vega at The Pub and ends up going home with her for some no-strings-attached fun, something finally seems to be going right. Alyssa is just the spot of normalcy Daniel needs in his freak show of a life.

Until his sexy one night stand turns out to be a freak just like him. A rather badass freak as a matter of fact.

So much for normalcy.

As the temptation to use the power Sarelia gave him grows stronger, Daniel finally gives in and embraces the strength the power gives him. With it, he can do anything.

Well, except raise the dead.

Too bad the power's so damn addicting.

Quirky Kink: Our Author In The House Today Is Holley Trent!

I'm happy to welcome author Holley Trent to Author In The House today.  Holley sometimes calls her writings "quirky kink", an interesting catch phrase but she's an intriguing woman.  To introduce you a little to Holley before we talk about writing and take a peek at her newest release, Executive Decision, the second in the month of May, let's check out her bio:

Who is Holley Trent:

Now let's settle for some conversation:

Holley, why do you write:

I'm a pretty reserved person. I observe more than I talk and writing gives me an opportunity to prove to the world I actually have a personality.

Do you read the same genre that you write? Why or why not?

I read a little bit of everything because my tastes fluctuate as rapidly as my hormone levels.

Favorite authors or books (just list a few):

I love Janet Evanovich's early romances, Fannie Flagg is my Southern favorite, and I'll read anything humorist Celia Rivenbark publishes.

When did you first consider being a writer?

High school, but back then I thought I would go into journalism (which is sometimes just a different kind of fiction).

What was the first thing you ever wrote?

I can't remember what it was about, but my sister and I both wrote stories back in fifth/sixth grade and swapped them. We thought they were funny at the time, but I'd probably crawl into a hole if I had to share it now.

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

I catch up on the television shows everyone else is hooked on but that I'm a season or so behind on.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you choose?

I think I'd like to live in Ireland for a while, even though I've never visited. I worry about the lack of sun, however. When my vitamin D levels get low I turn into a beast.

What’s the inspiration behind your current release?

Executive Decision was inspired by a job I couldn't stop fuming about even six years after quitting. I had a great boss, but some of my coworkers were serious joykills.

What’s your current project and what’s coming next for you as an author?

I've got a lot of pans in the fire, but the one occupying the most of my writing time is a novella I'm trying to finish in time to make a submission call deadline. It's about a woman who brings her family tree full circle and the man who helps her do it.

Share one guilty secret.

I ate my son's Easter candy and hid the evidence.

Just for fun – what’s your preference?

In the dark, preferably with the ceiling fan on.

Cook or eat out?

Cook. My kids are at the age where they're less embarrassing when kept at home.

 Camping or five star hotel?

Hotel!

Midnight or dawn?

Midnight. I'm still a bit of a night owl, although age is making it more likely I fall asleep with my computer on my lap.

Beach or mountains?

I live in the mountains, but grew up near the beach. I prefer the beach. I'm an eastern North Carolinian at heart.

Executive Decision Blurb:

Secretary Ellen works in a headhunting office that handles most of its business by phone. When one job candidate, a marine engineer named Christian, drives to Edenton to assess the firm’s legitimacy, he recognizes Ellen from something she thought was well in her past. When the sexual magnetism between Ellen and Christian boils over on the waterfront, they attempt a tryst that leaves them both feeling unsatisfied.

Christian sees Ellen as the mermaid of his fantasies and wants to build on their chance encounter, but does Ellen want to be caught in his net or will she swim off to get her satisfaction elsewhere?

Executive Decision is available 5/25. Buy at Musa at http://musapublishing.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=4&products_id=284 or online at other fine e-retailers.

Also look for Holley's work in the upcoming Father's Day Anthology from Rebel Ink Press, The Dad Plan

Maybe he offered a shoulder to lean on….words of wisdom….a hand to hold tight to cross the street…. or always took time to buy an ice cream cone but dads are special. In The Dad Plan, Rebel Ink Press presents a collection of stories about dads just in time for Father’s Day.

Memories, special moments shared, dads falling love, family ties and people bonded. Anyone can be a father but being a dad is reserved for special men of all flavors. Some dads bond at birth, some choose their child, and others blend into a family. The Dad Plan celebrates all aspects of fatherhood with a wide range of stories celebrating Dad.

Beautiful stories about all kinds of dads (okay, I confess, my story "Three of Hearts" is included)

A Warm Welcome To Kevin Reed - and author Kate Roth!

I'm excited today to introduce everyone to Kevin Reed.  Now Kevin's not an author, he's the product of an author's imagination.  He's a character in the just released novel The Low Notes by author Kate Roth.  Kate, like me, is a Rebel - a Rebel Ink Press writer and she's a very welcome addition to our ever growing family.

Here's the cover - I just had to share it first because Rebel Ink Press covers tend to be sensational thanks to the efforts of our very own Carl J. Franklin - the man is a cover art god - he manages to capture the essence of a novel in the always important cover.  Take a look at this one and read the cover blurb so we all know who Kevin is in the novel

Blurb:

When a chance meeting between high school teacher Kevin Reed and singer Nina Jordan ignites an instant spark, they must decide if it's more important to follow your heart or follow the rules.

After caring for his dying father, Kevin Reed, returns to his hometown of Wexley Falls, bereaved, unemployed and exhausted at the thought of starting a new life. After a failed blind date, Kevin meets young singer Nina Jordan who takes his breath away with the sound of her voice. The connection is instantaneous and mutual on their first date, but both are crestfallen when they discover days later, to their horror, Nina is Kevin's student at the   local high school.

Deciphering between notions of love and lust, fate and coincidence, Kevin and Nina find themselves unable to turn their backs on what they can't deny is a once in a lifetime feeling. Told from both perspectives, The Low Notes explores a love that feels right even though it seems wrong.

Kate Roth character interview – Kevin Reed

Now's the fun part - I'm sitting down with Kevin Reed and we're going to talk.

1.      Kevin, come in, have a seat, get comfortable.  Would you like a soda? Coffee? Maybe tea?

Thanks for having me. I’m fine, thank you.

2.      I understand you just moved back to Wexley Falls, your hometown, after a recent loss.  Can you tell you what it’s like to return back home? Is it the way you remembered or different in either a good or bad way?

It’s been strange being back in Wexley. I was just a kid when my father and I moved so a lot has changed over the years. I’m glad to be near my cousin though. He’s been really good to me since my dad passed away.

3.      So, you’re a high school teacher.  What subjects do you teach? And can you tell us what your favorite thing about teaching? And maybe the least favorite?

The majority of my classes are 9th grade English but I also have a creative writing course offered only to seniors. I enjoy my creative writing class. It’s the most interesting to me and I…have some really great students. I don’t know if I have a least favorite thing about teaching. I mean, I have a few wiseass kids that make some days challenging. To be honest with you I’m not in love with teaching but it’s paying the bills for now.

4.       Nina Jordan has an amazing voice, I hear.  Can you describe her sound and style? What about her voice impressed you?

Nina’s something else when she’s singing. You’d never know she was only seventeen…I didn’t. She’s got this powerful belt that she can let out and in the next instant she’s singing as soft as a whisper. It’s mesmerizing really. She’s mesmerizing.

5.      It must have been a shock when you learned Nina is one of your students.  Could you share with us how you felt about that? And describe her reaction if you would, please.

Um, yeah it was shocking. I was under the impression she was a bit older and I don’t think she expected to see me on the first day of school. I was angry at first but there was only one thing we could do and that was try and maintain an appropriate relationship. Just as teacher and student…

              6.      I spent a little time in the classroom as a substitute teacher so I know in most school districts (if not all) a student/teacher relationship would be forbidden.  How does the Wexley Falls school system view such relationships?

Wexley Falls High School is no different from where you’ve worked. From what I understand it’s strictly forbidden. Against the rules.

7.      You’re the teacher, Nina’s the student.  Do you mind telling us what age difference exists between you?

Its nine years…nine years difference.

8.      Let’s just talk about you for a moment, Kevin.  What’s your passion?

Writing is my passion. I’ve been working on a book about my father’s life. I suppose I could also so I have a passion for music but writing comes first. Music is simply inspiration for my passion.

9.       And what are your favorite things to do for fun?

I like a lot of things. I like going to see live music. I like being in nature. Reading.

10.   What do your families think about the relationship or are they aware?

Look, I can only speak for myself and I just want to say this, I wish my father could’ve known Nina. He would’ve adored her and I think he would’ve eventually come to realize that despite the circumstances we truly care about each other. He would’ve recognized that what we have is real.

 11.   If you could give a reader one reason why they should read The Low Notes what would it be?

I think it’s worth reading to show that sometimes you just can’t help who you fall for. My story…our story isn’t all moonlight and roses. It’s about a real, unavoidable, incomprehensible love that wouldn’t let go of us.

12.   Do you tell your author your story, maybe whisper it into her ear or is Kate in control?

Kate likes to think she’s in control. But honestly the story was there all along, just waiting to be written.

Thank you, Kevin.  I appreciate your honesty and the fact you took time to talk with us.  Now let's share some links where readers can find out more about Kate Roth and also find The Low Notes!

And now, just like dessert, we've saved something good for last.. an excerpt from Kate Roth's new novel, The Low Notes:

Excerpt:

Nina scoffed at him. “We both know you’re not just my teacher.”

Kevin ran a hand through his dark hair and sighed again, glancing back at her.

“Okay, maybe I’m not but there are rules,” his voice faded out as Nina stood up and came toward him, her eyes fixed solidly on him. It's now or never, she thought. She’d had a lot of time to think about how she really felt and now was the time to tell him.

“Screw the rules,” Nina said, coming dangerously close to Kevin, her hands almost touching him as he sat paralyzed on his desk.

“Come on,” he whispered a plea.

“I'm serious,” she replied in the same hushed tone.

Kevin drew in a ragged breath as her hands moved forward and slid over his knees slowly. She saw him shift uneasily though he didn't stop her. His eyes flashed to the door. The hallway was empty. The bell had blared a while ago and they were missing the assembly.

“Haven't we been through enough? We've tried fighting it but what's the point? Sometimes rules need to be broken. I think it's time we say screw the rules and do whatever we want,” she said, reaching up to run her fingers through his hair.

Nina was nervous being so forward with him but she’d already decided he was what she wanted, no matter the cost. The only thing she knew might be difficult would be pulling the truth from him as to whether he wanted her, too. The lines in his forehead softened as he searched her face with his chocolate eyes. She could see him giving in.

He began nodding before he let his hand reach out to cup her cheek, his thumb sweeping over her lips, parting them.

“Whatever we want,” he repeated in a whisper. Her lips curled into a smile under his thumb.
Oh - and it's on my TBR list.  It's a must-read for me.  I'm a total sucker for those going back to the hometown and falling in love kind of romances!!

A Warm Welcome To A Favorite Author - Lila Munro!

Let's start a new week off with one of my favorite authors, Lila Munro, best selling author of the Identity series.  Lila, by the way is also a Rebel Ink Press author and she's part of why I found Rebel Ink Press in the first place.  I'm delighted to have Lila here today so we're going sit down and get cozy for a candid chat about her newest release, Assumed Master, writing and life in general.

Lila, I'm happy you're here today.

I’d like to thank Lee Ann for hosting me here at Author in the House. I’m delighted to be here and will be in and out along the way today to answer questions or chat it up with the audience.

What’s your favorite thing about being a writer/author?

What’s not to like? I get to create alter worlds where my realistic characters can enjoy a fantasy or two within the reasonable parameters I set forth (okay, that’s a stretch really, my muses stretch the boundaries whenever I’m not looking) and share all this with readers. Oh, and the checks help. J How many people can boast they do what they love on a daily basis and get paid?

What’s your least favorite thing?

When one story ends, before another starts. I hate the down time to be honest, but I think I summed it up best a few days ago after finally completely finishing Assumed Master. I told my husband I thought I had writer’s drop (the BDSM crew will get this ;) ). I don’t know about other writer’s but the process for me is exhausting and for a few days after finishing one piece I tend to sleep a lot. Then I feel guilty over those lost hours as the next set of characters are hounding me to get up and get started on their tales.

Why do you write?

I don’t think at this point I can stop. There was a time when my house was full of kids and I had a “real” job, because everyone knows writing is just a hobby—right?, that I simply could turn off the urge to write and ignore it to an extent. Now that I can sit and do this all day long, thank you husband for making a good living and tending to my every whim, I don’t think I could stop. Is that an answer? Not really, but I think for a writer, explaining why we do it is akin to trying to explain to a child that just because we can’t see the wind doesn’t mean it’s not there. There really isn’t a sufficient answer, but you know the answer is there somewhere.

Do you read the same genre that you write?

I do read what I write, however, my list of genres doesn’t stop there. My bookshelves, virtual and real, are filled with a wide variety.

When did you first consider being a writer?

Before I could spell. Seriously, I’ve always wanted to write and have done so since I could formulate a sentence, it just wasn’t until a few years ago the dream of becoming published seemed feasible.

What was the first thing you ever wrote?

Do love notes count? Says a lot about what I’d eventually end up writing, huh? I remember I was simply smitten with a blond haired, blue eyed boy in the second grade…

Tell us in brief about your personal road to publication.

Four score and…J Okay, let’s see. After raising a family, working at so many different jobs I lose track at times what they all were, and following a Marine around for many years, I found my nest empty, no jobs to be had, and my Marine had attained a rank sufficient to support our household and buy all the Vera’s I wanted. Thank you, husband! It was at that time the urges to write started overwhelming me and I set up a “home office” after my husband encouraged me to try my hand at it. It took me several months to write The Executive Officer’s Wife and then the business of what next took hold. It was by chance I found a small press in Tennessee which seemed a good fit and I submitted. It was the one and only press I submitted to and got a yes right out of the gate. Unusual? Yes. And to be frank it scared the hell out of me. I thought either I was that good or that bad. Were they looking for good or taking anything and everything? Well, I was neither. And after some adjusting of goals, I eventually pulled that piece and did some major re-writing on it before turning it lose into the world a second time. I know, pretty boring stuff. There were no bells and whistles, no fireworks or grand parades. I slipped into the e-world on a whisper, but you can rest assured I’m heard loud and clear now. J

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

Research for more writing. I consider everything I do, everywhere I go, and everyone I meet to be a source of inspiration. I like to shop and hit the beach and I adore the movies. I also like to grow stuff in the dirt, southern women are like that, you know. I walk a lot, too. For my health primarily, but it’s good for clearing the cobwebs and getting refocused.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you choose?

I’d be happy in a cardboard box honestly as long as my husband was with me. I know most people probably think that’s the most ludicrous answer ever, but after years of being without him due to deployments, location isn’t near as important to me as the company.

What’s the inspiration behind your current release?

I have to tell you, the current release was never on the radar screen. It’s in fact book four in my Identity series and wasn’t supposed to be. It had been my initial plan to stop at book three, but the characters from that installment informed me their story was incomplete and thus book four, Assumed Master, was born. And again I made the mistake of assuming (hehe) I knew what would happen next and my muses just informed me after Assumed Master was off to Elizabeth that Allen would be telling his story next, thus book five is currently in progress.

Are your family and friends supportive?

Absolutely. I hear horror stories all the time from other writers in my genre in which their family and friends accuse them of writing porn and all sorts of other things. I’ve never had this issue, thankfully. All my neighbors know what I do and not one of them thinks ill of me and in fact endure my constant questions in my hunt for the next great story line.

What other occupation do you have (or did have) in addition to writing?  Or, in short, what’s your day job?

Well, currently, I stay at home and write all day. Okay, that’s not entirely true, the writing is only 5% of what a writers day entails, all the other administrative stuff takes up the other 95%. Nonetheless, I can now stay home to do this. Before I stayed home though I held several different jobs. Moving so much requires one to have lots of tools to work with. I have worked fast-food, as a convenience store clerk, cleaned motel rooms, sewed in a garment factory, worked in banks, did vending in retail, and stocked soy products at the commissary. I don’t think I missed anything.

Share a memory that made it into some of your writing.

Oh, that’d be tattling on myself. ;)

Self-promotion – love it or hate it?

I endure it because it’s neccessary. I don’t hate it, but love would be a stretch.

Lila Munro currently resides on the coast of North Carolina with her husband and their two four-legged kids. She’s a military wife with an empty nest and takes much of her inspiration for her heroes from the marines she’s lived around for the past fifteen years. Coining the term realmantica, she strives to produce quality romance in a realistic setting. Her genre of choice is contemporary romance that spans everything from the sensual to BDSM and ménage. When she’s not writing, she enjoys reading everything she can get her hands on, trips to the museum and aquarium, taking field research trips, and soaking up the sun on the nearby beaches. Her works include The Executive Officer’s Wife, Bound By Trust, Destiny’s Fire, Salvation, Three for Keeps, the Force Recon series, the Slower Lower series, and the Identity series. She’s a member in good standing of RWA and Passionate Ink. Currently she’s working on sequels to several series to be released throughout 2012. And has a brand new line scheduled for winter 2012-13. We may be born to the lifestyle,

Julie Stevens and Dante Larson always knew their tastes were a bit more eccentric than those of the average person, but acknowledgement of their chosen paths came at different times. While their lives have run parallel for the last twenty years, destiny always came knocking at the wrong time. Julie was a closeted edge player and before Dante could pull her free of her fears, Mason came along and dragged her kicking and screaming from her self-inflicted darkness, leaving Dante wanting. Although Dante’s been in love with Julie since the day he first laid eyes on her, he's happily married to Blake. But the tides are turning.

But Lady Fate dictates how it should be lived…

Still mourning the death of the only Master she’s ever known, Julie finds herself forced to live with the one man she’s been terrified of for years, Dante. While she has to admit something between them feels right, just as many things feel very, very wrong, starting with the fact he’s married to her gay best friend. Before she even has time to sort out her current predicament, another man catches Julie's attention. But after losing her mother, her sister, and her husband, can Julie come to grips with the fact that Keegan McKettrick jumps out of perfectly good helicopters for a living, rescue diving for the Coast Guard? And where exactly does that leave Dante, who knows for sure he needs a woman to complete his unconventional marriage? Quite frankly, he's tired of waiting.

Britni Hill, Debut Author, Is In The House - And so Taylor Scott!

We're sitting down today with author Britni Hill.  Her debut novel Tears In The Rubble is climbing up the romance charts as we speak.  Here's the blurb:

Layla Swanson grew up in the lazy, small town of Hollow Oaks and can’t wait to get out. She has big dreams and big plans in the big city. Layla has worked hard and her senior year is nearly at its end. She can’t wait to go away to college. And she’s one step closer to getting what she wants. Layla isn’t letting anyone get in her way.

Taylor Scott may not be your typical country boy, but he doesn’t mind Hollow Oaks. His dreams may not be marked on paper and set in stone, but it doesn’t mean he doesn’t have them.
A chance meeting between the two childhood friends may have Layla second guessing her longtime plan. Their rekindled friendship is leading them down a path neither one could have foreseen. But with Layla leaving for college, many challenges face them, especially when she so stubbornly sticks to her solo plan.

Is Taylor’s love enough to convince Layla to let him in? Or when everything falls apart, will Layla run away?

Interview with Taylor Scott:
We convinced Taylor Scott to sit down and chat with us.  Thanks to Taylor for coming over and thanks to Britni for bringing him!

1.   1.   Taylor, I hear you’re a small town kind of guy. Can you tell us what like so much about Hollow Oaks?  You know it’s funny.  When my dad first dragged us here I was determined to hate it.  Now though, I like the fresh air and the quiet nights.  And Hollow Oaks is where I met the girl of my dreams.

2.    2.  Why don’t you wear cowboy boots (I’m intrigued)?    (laughs) I can still have some style even if I’m small town. (straightens his collar) Plus, cowboy boots are just so uncomfortable.  Too be honest I never had a reason to wear them.

3.      You play football – what position? And are you good at sports?       Quarterback (shrugs and scratches the back of his head) Sometimes I feel like it’s the only thing I’m good at.  I don’t play any other sports though, just football.

4.      You like old rock – can you tell us why? And what your favorite rock singers and groups are?  There’s just something about old rock.  80’s hair bands are great.  Music had meaning then and you can feel it.  I’d have to say Aerosmith, The Beatles, and Clapton are some of my favorites.

5.      What can you share about Layla? You’ve known her a long time but now you’re grown up, are things different?           ( He ducks his head and looks at his hands trying to hide a smile) Layla, she’s something else.  We grew up together.  There was a time we were inseparable.  She’s a bit headstrong and she made some mistakes.  (He looks sad here) But I feel like things are headed in the right direction, a good direction.  Things will always be different, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be good.

6.      What would be reason enough to leave Hollow Oaks? Would you leave to follow your heart?  I did.      Well, I thought that’s what I was doing, following my heart.  I left for college in California because that’s what Layla wanted me to do.  I guess I just followed my heart the wrong direction.  But I’d do it again.  Just the right way this time.

7.      Give me three words to describe yourself.        Honest, loyal, and handsome of course (he rubs at the stubble on his jaw giving a half smile)

8.       Can you tell me how others see you?      I think most people see me as too nice.  And maybe I am.  People also tend to view me as “the jock” just because I was the quarterback in high school and I played a bit of college ball.

9.      Taylor, what’s your best quality?       Hmmm…my stubbornness.  I don’t give up when I want something.  It makes me quite persistent.

10.  And on the flip side, what’s your worst habit or weakness?      Layla, Layla, Layla.  She will always be my biggest weakness.  And my worst habit.  I can’t seem to quit her, but that’s okay.  My niceness gets in my way a lot too

Alright here we go...it's the first character interview I've done so I hope it's good.
