A Warm Welcome To Kevin Reed - and author Kate Roth!

I'm excited today to introduce everyone to Kevin Reed.  Now Kevin's not an author, he's the product of an author's imagination.  He's a character in the just released novel The Low Notes by author Kate Roth.  Kate, like me, is a Rebel - a Rebel Ink Press writer and she's a very welcome addition to our ever growing family.

Here's the cover - I just had to share it first because Rebel Ink Press covers tend to be sensational thanks to the efforts of our very own Carl J. Franklin - the man is a cover art god - he manages to capture the essence of a novel in the always important cover.  Take a look at this one and read the cover blurb so we all know who Kevin is in the novel

Blurb:

When a chance meeting between high school teacher Kevin Reed and singer Nina Jordan ignites an instant spark, they must decide if it's more important to follow your heart or follow the rules.

After caring for his dying father, Kevin Reed, returns to his hometown of Wexley Falls, bereaved, unemployed and exhausted at the thought of starting a new life. After a failed blind date, Kevin meets young singer Nina Jordan who takes his breath away with the sound of her voice. The connection is instantaneous and mutual on their first date, but both are crestfallen when they discover days later, to their horror, Nina is Kevin's student at the   local high school.

Deciphering between notions of love and lust, fate and coincidence, Kevin and Nina find themselves unable to turn their backs on what they can't deny is a once in a lifetime feeling. Told from both perspectives, The Low Notes explores a love that feels right even though it seems wrong.

Kate Roth character interview – Kevin Reed

Now's the fun part - I'm sitting down with Kevin Reed and we're going to talk.

1.      Kevin, come in, have a seat, get comfortable.  Would you like a soda? Coffee? Maybe tea?

Thanks for having me. I’m fine, thank you.

2.      I understand you just moved back to Wexley Falls, your hometown, after a recent loss.  Can you tell you what it’s like to return back home? Is it the way you remembered or different in either a good or bad way?

It’s been strange being back in Wexley. I was just a kid when my father and I moved so a lot has changed over the years. I’m glad to be near my cousin though. He’s been really good to me since my dad passed away.

3.      So, you’re a high school teacher.  What subjects do you teach? And can you tell us what your favorite thing about teaching? And maybe the least favorite?

The majority of my classes are 9th grade English but I also have a creative writing course offered only to seniors. I enjoy my creative writing class. It’s the most interesting to me and I…have some really great students. I don’t know if I have a least favorite thing about teaching. I mean, I have a few wiseass kids that make some days challenging. To be honest with you I’m not in love with teaching but it’s paying the bills for now.

4.       Nina Jordan has an amazing voice, I hear.  Can you describe her sound and style? What about her voice impressed you?

Nina’s something else when she’s singing. You’d never know she was only seventeen…I didn’t. She’s got this powerful belt that she can let out and in the next instant she’s singing as soft as a whisper. It’s mesmerizing really. She’s mesmerizing.

5.      It must have been a shock when you learned Nina is one of your students.  Could you share with us how you felt about that? And describe her reaction if you would, please.

Um, yeah it was shocking. I was under the impression she was a bit older and I don’t think she expected to see me on the first day of school. I was angry at first but there was only one thing we could do and that was try and maintain an appropriate relationship. Just as teacher and student…

              6.      I spent a little time in the classroom as a substitute teacher so I know in most school districts (if not all) a student/teacher relationship would be forbidden.  How does the Wexley Falls school system view such relationships?

Wexley Falls High School is no different from where you’ve worked. From what I understand it’s strictly forbidden. Against the rules.

7.      You’re the teacher, Nina’s the student.  Do you mind telling us what age difference exists between you?

Its nine years…nine years difference.

8.      Let’s just talk about you for a moment, Kevin.  What’s your passion?

Writing is my passion. I’ve been working on a book about my father’s life. I suppose I could also so I have a passion for music but writing comes first. Music is simply inspiration for my passion.

9.       And what are your favorite things to do for fun?

I like a lot of things. I like going to see live music. I like being in nature. Reading.

10.   What do your families think about the relationship or are they aware?

Look, I can only speak for myself and I just want to say this, I wish my father could’ve known Nina. He would’ve adored her and I think he would’ve eventually come to realize that despite the circumstances we truly care about each other. He would’ve recognized that what we have is real.

 11.   If you could give a reader one reason why they should read The Low Notes what would it be?

I think it’s worth reading to show that sometimes you just can’t help who you fall for. My story…our story isn’t all moonlight and roses. It’s about a real, unavoidable, incomprehensible love that wouldn’t let go of us.

12.   Do you tell your author your story, maybe whisper it into her ear or is Kate in control?

Kate likes to think she’s in control. But honestly the story was there all along, just waiting to be written.

Thank you, Kevin.  I appreciate your honesty and the fact you took time to talk with us.  Now let's share some links where readers can find out more about Kate Roth and also find The Low Notes!

And now, just like dessert, we've saved something good for last.. an excerpt from Kate Roth's new novel, The Low Notes:

Excerpt:

Nina scoffed at him. “We both know you’re not just my teacher.”

Kevin ran a hand through his dark hair and sighed again, glancing back at her.

“Okay, maybe I’m not but there are rules,” his voice faded out as Nina stood up and came toward him, her eyes fixed solidly on him. It's now or never, she thought. She’d had a lot of time to think about how she really felt and now was the time to tell him.

“Screw the rules,” Nina said, coming dangerously close to Kevin, her hands almost touching him as he sat paralyzed on his desk.

“Come on,” he whispered a plea.

“I'm serious,” she replied in the same hushed tone.

Kevin drew in a ragged breath as her hands moved forward and slid over his knees slowly. She saw him shift uneasily though he didn't stop her. His eyes flashed to the door. The hallway was empty. The bell had blared a while ago and they were missing the assembly.

“Haven't we been through enough? We've tried fighting it but what's the point? Sometimes rules need to be broken. I think it's time we say screw the rules and do whatever we want,” she said, reaching up to run her fingers through his hair.

Nina was nervous being so forward with him but she’d already decided he was what she wanted, no matter the cost. The only thing she knew might be difficult would be pulling the truth from him as to whether he wanted her, too. The lines in his forehead softened as he searched her face with his chocolate eyes. She could see him giving in.

He began nodding before he let his hand reach out to cup her cheek, his thumb sweeping over her lips, parting them.

“Whatever we want,” he repeated in a whisper. Her lips curled into a smile under his thumb.
Oh - and it's on my TBR list.  It's a must-read for me.  I'm a total sucker for those going back to the hometown and falling in love kind of romances!!
